Ending Summer on High Note – Camp Counselor Amanda Previews Your Labor Day Weekend Options

And if you can’t wait that long to get your festival fix, you’re in luck! There are three area events this Labor Day Weekend that are the perfect way to close down the summer… in fact, your Summer Camp Counselors will be out in full force doing just that. I will be headed to The Illinois Blues Festival and possibly spending Sunday at Shoe Fest, while Camp Counselor Carmel will be headed to Shoe Fest and North Coast, and Camp Counselor Alex will be at North Coast on Sunday as well. Here’s a preview of each of the three…

The Budweiser Illinois Blues Festival

For those living closest to Three Sisters Park in Central IL, there is Budweiser Illinois Blues Festival taking place at the Peoria Riverfront Park in downtown Peoria, IL.  The IL Blues Fest promises to be a good time with a great line up featuring many former Summer Camp performers… il blues fest Seriously, if you were not at the Rev Peyton’s Big Damn Band set at Summer Camp 2013 in the pouring rain, you missed out!  There are few bands that I am willing to stand out in the pouring rain for… and Rev Peyton is one of them.  With his amazingly intricate guitar playing and Breezy’s excited and soulful washboards, I can not imagine really enjoying another band this much. Illinois Blues Fest kicks off Friday with doors at 6 PM and music starting at 7. Victor Wooten, Robert Randolph, Taj Mahal and more will all perform over the two days, and tickets are on sale now!

The 5 Year Anniversary of Shoe Fest

Summer Camp veterans Old Shoe have been hosting their own festival, perfectly dubbed Shoe Fest, for 5 years now.  This year they have a pretty amazing line up full of other Summer Camp favorites.  shoefest2015_announce4_v1_web_image_artists_all Their promise of “one more dance before Summer turns to Fall” is really what this festival is all about – the atmosphere and amazing vibe of Shoe Fest is sure to make it a favorite for first timers according to those who have previously gone.  The festival takes place at Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See just an hour south of Chicago in Manteno, IL. I would not be a good “parent” Camp Counselor if I did not highlight all of the special family fun that is available at Shoe Fest – tere are Family Friendly activities available throughout the weekend:  Kung Fu, Yoga, Children’s Percussion, a Hula Hoop Workshop, Tie Dyes for Kids and more will all take place through the weekend… I can’t tell you enough how impressed I am with these great options which really make this a festival that is on my bucket list for the future. 3 Day Passes, as well as Saturday + Sunday Passes, and Sunday Only Passes are ON SALE NOW. Sunday Only Passes are pretty enticing, as the afternoon features a pretty amazing lineup that includes Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Chicago favorite Mr. Blotto, the Larry Keel Experience, and a Shoe String Jam which includes Chicago Farmer, Allie Kral, Old Shoe, and more!

North Coast Music Festival

For those who are living in the Windy City, North Coast Music Festival is happening in Chicago’s Union Park.  ncmf15_singledays (1) Summer Camp favorites Widespread Panic and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead will be headlining the festival, but there are 7 stages in total featuring a wide variety of musical acts worth digging in to. Nahko & Medicine for the People, Galactic, Manic Focus, Turbo Suit featuring Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee, Future Rock and many other Summer Camp favorites are on the lineup as well, so it’s sure to be an incredible weekend! Even better, the folks over at North Coast have generously set up a special discount for us SCampers!
