UMPH MADNESS: Join Camp Counselor Alex D in Voting for the "Best Umphrey's Songs" – Final Brackets Are Here!

Summer Camp Counselor-Managed Facebook group to have some madness of our own. I asked group members to list their top 20 favorite songs by our beloved Umphrey’s McGee. I tallied up the results, ranked the songs in order of votes, and made a brand new bracket called “Umph MADNESS.” Each day for the past couple weeks, I posted different match-ups from each region – appropriately called “GOD BONER,” “Waful House,” “Jimmy Stewart,” and “Kickball!” It’s been an incredibly fun process watching the votes come in and observing the trends of the most popular songs… and now, we have the Final Four (or more appropriately the Final 2×2). umphbracket But before you go cast your vote, let’s take a moment to look back at the process and results that got us here, picking from between Nothing too Fancy, Hurt Bird Bath, Wappy Sprayberry, or All in Time for a winner.

Setting The Field of 64

The original posts soliciting votes did not have as much participation as I had hoped. Less than 20 Umphreaks named their favorite 20 tunes, leaving me with a little over 70 songs to narrow into the coveted field of 64. The songs were ranked in order 1-64 by number of votes, and for tie-breakers, I used a random number generator. The top 4 songs, in order: 40’s Theme, Der Bluten Kat, Hajimemashite, and All in Time. Hopefully this will explain the surprise seeding of heavy-hitting songs such as Utopian Fir getting a 16 seed and Pay the Snucka receiving a 15. Noteworthy songs that had their bubble bursted and missed the cut: Miss Tinkle’s Overture, Bad Friday, Robot World, The Haunt, Resolution, #5, among others.

Each match-up was left up to the group for about 24 hours before I took it down, tallied the votes, and moved onto the next region and / or round.

First Round Notable Results:

 • #13 seed White Man’s Moccasins had the first upset of the tournament with a 32-30 edge over #4 Partyin Peeps.
 • #3 seed Nothing too Fancy kept it simple with a WHOMPING 42-1 margin over #14 13 Days. Whomever thought 13 Days is a better song than N2F clearly has never gotten down to the dueling guitar shreds of N2F before.
 • In a colossal first-round match-up, #1 Der Bluten Kat dodged a bullet with a 24-20 outcome over #16 Utopian Fir.
 • Likewise to the pounding N2F gave 13 Days, #1 Hajimemashite gave #16 Similar Skin an unfamiliar crushing of 45-2.
 • All four 11 seeds took down their match-up against #6: August over Dear Lord 38-5, Divisions over 2nd Self 27-17, Kabump over No Diablo 25-22, and Ringo 28, Bright Lights, Big City 18.
 • #15 Pay the Snucka cleared any debt with a powerful take down of #2 Booth Love, 29-17.

Second Round Notable Results:

 • #2 Glory slipped by #7 Mantis by the slimmest of margins, 26-25.
 • #1 DBK continued their narrow victories, capping #8 In the Kitchen by 2, 27-25.
 • #9 Cemetery Walk 2 was buried by #1 All in Time, 50-2.

The Sweetness 16 Notable Results:

 • Another close one for #1 DBK, slipping by #4 Puppet String, 32-30
 • All 4 #1 seeds advance to The Example 8.

The Example 8 Notable Results:

 • All in Time cruises past The Triple Wide to be the only 1 seed to reach the Final 2×2.
 • N2F also smacked around 40’s Theme, and Hurt Bird Bath wins by 9 votes over DBK.
 • Wappy Sprayberry juust slips by Hajimemashite by a count of 26-21.
It’s been a very fun & exciting process so far, and i’ve really enjoyed hearing about how much of a struggle it is for fellow die-hards to choose one song over another – a few friends have referenced favorite songs “winning in overtime” to make their way in to their final picks, and others simply just refusing to vote! How do you compare apples to oranges? Voting for the Final 2×2 is going on NOW! ]]>
