Camp Counselor Jason Wins Big With Tedeschi Trucks Band

I have seen many bands at Summer Camp Music Festival in passing and I fear that Tedeschi Trucks Band was on that list. It was refreshing to head out to a venue as iconic as the Ryman Auditorium, sit in the “Mother Church Of Country Music” and really give them a listen. The band sounded absolutely amazing and the acoustics were so great that at one point somebody behind me on the balcony lightly shouted “Thank You,” and Susan replied with a gentle “You’re Welcome”. From start to finish, there wasn’t a dull moment in the set. At one point, Tyler Greenwell and JJ Johnson ripped through a Drums section that reminded me a little bit of a Phil Collins and Chester Thompson drum duet. The horns section really filled up the room, while the backup vocalists added some serious depth to each tune. All the while, the Burbridge brothers impressed me in their own right. Never before have I seen a keyboardist bust out a flute quite like Kofi, and I can assure you I’ll make every effort not to miss Oteil at Summer Camp ever again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhhdDZjLlDg There is nothing like watching Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks perform together either. Susan’s voice is amazing in itself, however hearing it in a venue like the Ryman is truly mesmerizing. Derek and Susan’s guitar playing compliment one another beautifully while Derek Trucks guitar solos often kept me speechless. This eleven piece band made the Ryman their own that night. Having had the venue near sold out there was an energy in the room that night I haven’t witnessed in some time. It’s a bit surreal to attend a concert where the audience is sitting a good majority of the time only to get up for a standing ovation. With an extremely impressive set list I couldn’t help but wonder what they would play on night two.

Setlist: Are You Ready, Made Up Mind, Do I Look Worried, Midnight In Harlem, Let Me Get By, Idle Wind, More and More (Little Milton Cover), These Walls (With Jerry Douglas, on acoustics), Don’t Think Twice, It’s Allright (Bob Dylan cover w/ Jerry Douglas, Acoustic without Derek), I Pity The Fool, Bound For Glory, The Storm

Encore: Keep On Growing (Derek and the Dominos cover w/ Jack Perason), Space Captain (Joe Cocker Cover w/ Jack Pearson)
