Camp Counselor Carmel Shares 5 Life Lessons from Female Musicians

These five fierce women have taught us some valuable life lessons over the years about what it takes to make your dreams a reality.

1) Alana Rocklin – Commit to your craft

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3ajwEOSeKI  Alana Rocklin was almost unheard of a year ago when STS9 announced they would be replacing long time bassist David Murphy with this under the radar studio musician. While the adjustment period seemed a bit awkward, Rocklin has managed to tap into the unique creative energy of this band like no other. She has evolved STS9’s collective sound and fans are responding like never before. This musician is the real deal and knows her craft exceptionally well, yet she still strives to learn and grow with every show she plays. Her respect for the profession and strong work ethic have helped STS9 grow exponentially. Through hard work and dedication, Rocklin has undoubtedly made a name for herself in a very short period of time.

2) Nikki Glaspie – Follow your passion

Not everyone knows this, but Nikki Glaspie used to play drums for Beyoncé! But as it turned out, being that close to the dream and realizing it isn’t your own is a tough pill to swallow. So Glaspie turned to funk and hasn’t looked back. After a long run with the band Dumpstaphunk, this incredibly talented drummer has joined an outfit that is infused with soul – The Nth Power. Besides her obvious talent, the best part about this artist is the smile that comes across her face when she is playing the music she loves in front of an audience. By following her passion, Nikki Glaspie is able to create an art that both inspires and rejuvenates the soul.

3) Allie Kral – Put yourself first

When Allie Kral left Cornmeal back in 2013, it was unclear what would come next. Over the past two years this fiddle player has toured the US along side some major bluegrass acts like Yonder Mountain String Band and Hot Buttered Rum, reaching audiences like never before and making a name for herself as a bonafide badass. The decision to move on from her humble beginnings with Cornmeal was obviously hard, but it is now clear that it was time for this bird to take flight and show the world all that she is capable of. Kral has taught us that sometimes you need to take those risks and break away from the pack in order to succeed.

4) Jen Hartswick – Never stop

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VLsPk7vZRk Jen Hartswick is everywhere! From sit-ins to side projects, there are few stages this artist hasn’t dominated at some point in her robust career. Hartswick’s relentless touring is a great example of how hard work pays off. After all, when you put yourself out there every night the way this musician does, it doesn’t go unnoticed. In fact, that’s how you build a passionate fanbase who will support your art for years and years to come. From the Trey Anastasio Band to VanGhost, Hartswick’s personality shines through every the note she hits. Her emotions are contagious and her delivery is powerful. Besides her raw talent, there is also a versatility that is fueled by passion and soul. This diva always delivers, no matter the show, because she never stops giving it her all.

5) Susan Tedeschi – Create your own terms

Susan Tedeschi is at the top of her game right now, which means she has the luxury of making it on her own terms. Since 2011 she has joined forces with her husband, guitarist virtuoso Derek Trucks, in order to equalize the work/life balance that is often disproportionate for most musicians. Together, Susan and Derek have been creating music and touring the globe along with their 11 piece band as the Tedeschi Trucks Band. But the most amazing thing about this artist is how she makes it look so easy. With a new album currently in the works, we are bound to see much much more from Susan Tedeschi in the near future. At the end of the day, she has managed to create a lifestyle that suits both her dreams, as well as her family.]]>
