Camp Counselor Bailey gets down with Soap in Lincoln NE

Lincoln had a big snow storm at the beginning of the week, so by the time Saturday rolled around everyone was more than ready to get out for an evening of fantastic music! The night started off with a bang as The Midland Band, a local progressive-rock group, took the stage. Although The Midland Band is heavily influenced by Umphrey’s McGee and Steely Dan, they have a unique sound that is all their own and they were the perfect group of musicians to start off the show.

Being a favorite among the Nebraska music scene, lots of people came down early to hear what improvisational jams they had in store. I, along with the rest of the crowd, was absolutely delighted to see the bassist hand off his guitar and serenade us with David Bowie’s Golden Years. The Midland Band put on a spectacular show, and got everyone’s adrenaline pumping!

The bodies continued to pack into the bar as Soap finished off the night. Now let me tell you, they don’t refer to themselves as “dance-infused rock” for nothing…from the moment their set began, the dancing never stopped! Although there were quite a few SCampers at the show, for the majority of the audience this was their very first Soap experience!

This group of guys always does an outstanding job with covers which is great, especially to keep a new crowd captivated that may not know their originals yet. With Styx’s Mr Roboto, No Quarter by Led Zeppelin, and Rush’s Tom Sawyer, there certainly was no shortage of awesome covers Saturday night. However, one of the reasons I enjoy this energetic rock group so much is because of their original songwriting talents. They played one of my personal favorites Need It More as well as a Answer the Call from their new EP, Just A Moment.

Overall the night was filled with great friends and fantastic music and I definitely felt the Summer Camp love. I can honestly say that we are anxiously awaiting this Minneapolis-based groups’s return to Nebraska. The show took place at Bodega’s Alley, a fun jam-band bar located in the heart of downtown Lincoln. If any of you SCampers happen to be passing through Nebraska, this is one of the many great places you can stop to catch a great live show.
