Camp Counselor Ålexander gets improvisational at UMbowl 2016

img_7342 copy Within a month away from Summer Camp 2016, the great Umphrey’s McGee hits the stage for yet another face-melting two night run at the Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas. These guys are back in “Sin City” to hit it extra hard with their super unique crowd-based interactive four quarter show dubbed UMBOWL. It should also be noted that Umph was accompanied by the beautiful ladies of Trey Anastasio Band – Jenniffer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman. The First Quarter consisted of what they call “RAW STEWAGE” which is an entire set of your favorite pieces of improv stitched together to create a long-form piece of new music. Ticket buyers were able to vote on their favorite live moments, and the band took those votes and assembled them into one tidy package. Quarter 1: Breaker[1], Roctopus[1], Fly Like a Beagle[1], Downtrodden[1], Until We Meet Again[1] img_7635 copy The Second Quarter was an “ALL REQUEST” Quarter where ticket buyers received a ballot to vote for the songs they’d most like to hear. Quarter 2: Nopener[2], Gulf Stream[3], Great American[4], Bullhead City[5], FF[6] > Soul Food III[7], 1000 Places to See Before You Die[8], Alex’s House[9], Forks[10] img_7415 copy Quarter 3: Entire quarter was completely improvised[11]    The Fourth Quarter was a ”CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE” experience where those in attendance were calling the plays, quarterbacking the music if you will. A series of choices were presented to the audience on projection screens and they were decided in real time. Voting occurred via text message and the results tallied as they came in. Fans were able to choose from a wide variety of UM originals, improvisational styles, and cover songs. Quarter 4: Slacker, Atmosfarag > Ringo[12] > “Zappa (Jake conducts) improv”[12], Sledgehammer[13], Wizard Burial Ground[14] img_7246 copyimg_7532 copy Overtime: I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)[13], All In Time[14]

Now that UMBOWL was over 5+ hours later, it was time to rest up for night two. Like the old saying goes, Rage, Rest, Repeat.. Well that was exactly the battle plan.
This setlist in particular really got me in the nostalgic mood as the first set introduced such classics as “Nemo” and “In The Kitchen.” And basically anytime Umph plays these classics, it seems like a very special treat your ears have been craving to hear. Also, set two hit one deep into home as they beautifully played Sade’s cover of  “No Ordinary Love.” Probably one of the coolest covers I have ever gotten the chance to see this band play.

Set 1: You Got the Wrong Guy > Speak Up, Bridgeless > Hajimemashite, Dump City, Nemo > In The Kitchen > Nemo, Red Tape[1], Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough[1] Set 2: Attachments, 1348, The Triple Wide > Bridgeless, Puppet String, No Ordinary Love[2], Women Wine and Song[1] > Wife Soup[1] Encore: Controversy > Bad Friday[1] [1] with Jennifer Hartswick on trumpet and Natalie Cressman on trombone [2] with Jennifer Hartswick on vocals All in all, this weekend was pretty top notch. It was my pre-SCamp party warming my senses up to the full experience that Summer Camp is. I am getting very excited to see these guys again in the coming weeks and can’t wait to see you all at there! And remember, to rage responsibly kids! img_7550 copy
