Photo by Darren Kemp[/caption] That was the scene at a recent show I attended in Buffalo, NY. When the band announced they would be doing a set of Cake (dubbed Cakeous), I was excited, as this isn’t the first time they have done something like it – last winter, the band did a 4 week residency and each week had a new theme! This Cakeous evening started pretty late, with Aqueous hitting the stage around 10:30 pm. I got there a bit early to catch up with friends and grab some good beers, so a little before they were about to hit the stage, we made our way up front. The band’s first set was a rager, and knowing it was going to be entirely made up of their original music, I was completely ready to dance!
Set 1: Underlyer> Complex Pt. 1, Marty > Timmy’s Blades, Back to You > Kitty Chaser (Explosions) > Triangle
I was really excited when they played Marty, a song I haven’t heard in a very long time! After their first set, they took a short break and hit the stage again with a guest member on keys. It was CAKE TIME! I have always been a fan of Cake, but have never seen them live, nor have I seen their music covered… but i have to say, Aqueous NAILED it!Set 2 ( Cakeous! ): Sheep Go to Heaven *> The Median > Nugget *> The Median, Hem of Your Garment *> Origami > Love You Madly * > Origami, Commissioning A Symphony in C * > They’re Calling For You > Wheels * > They’re Calling For Your, Daria * > Arco Arena * > Comfort Eagle * > Don’t Do It > End of the Movie *
Encore: Short Skirt, Long Jacket 1> The Distance 1
* Cake Cover
The encore really kicked ass! I mean come on… everyone knows Short Skirt and The Distance, right? The energy was so awesome to close out this truly special show!
Maybe they will have something up their sleeves when they play Summer Camp Music Festival this Memorial Day weekend! Who knows? They certainly know how to color outside the lines…
