Camp Counselor Carmel's Alternatives to the Rage Stick / Party Stick / Totem

paty stick This became even more of an issue when we found out that the people who orchestrated all of the breathtaking light shows did not appreciate an obstruction of their view. So I have set forth to provide some solutions to this epidemic… here, in no particular order, are some “Alternatives to the Party Stick” for you to consider as we head in to the Festival Season.

Walkie Talkies

Cheap walkie talkies are a great way to stay connected with your crew throughout the weekend. They are also great if your crew isn’t camping together so you can communicate between campsites. Friends often get separated between stages and a walkie talkie can help you reconnect along the way. Not to mention it is a great way for you to stay informed with major festival developments as they unfold, such as epic sit ins or impromptu jam sessions.

Pre-Determined Meeting Points

Have your crew agree on a meeting point at every stage and try to meet there before every show. Your campsite is also a great place to stop in between sets of music, especially because camping conveniently located between stages. Agree on a place and a time if you are really concerned with meeting up with everyone for a specific show like headliners or late nights. For example, my crew meets about twenty feet in front of the soundboard whenever Umphrey’s performs at Summer Camp. There is always enough space to dance and the sound is usually best from that spot.

Someone Else’s Party Stick

Then, simply inform your crew that this is the landmark they can find you at! Try not to pick a stick that’s obnoxious because it is usually a reflection of the crew that made it and no one wants to rage near an obnoxious crew. Obviously there are some risks with this method, but by Friday you should have found at least one or two party stick crews that enjoy the same shows as you and your friends do.

Follow Your “Tall Friend”

As a short individual, I understand the troubles that come with losing your crew. All too often while weaving in and out of the crowd you get separated from the people you are traveling with. Panic sets in when you find yourself surrounded by strangers and unfamiliar faces. The best solution is to let the tallest people in your crew lead the pack. This way you can see them from afar or they can see you if you end up lost.

Go Rogue

Going rogue at a festival is an amazing way to break free from conformity and discover your own path. Sometimes you want to catch a show that no one else wants to see and sometimes your friends are too lazy to leave the campsite because they suck at festy life. This is how folks used to get by in the good old days and there is absolutely nothing wrong with catching a show on your own. If fact, it’s the best way to make new friends!]]>
