A week after announcing their December shows would be their last, Summer Camp 2013 artist Roster McCabe took a surprising turn and instead announced they are changing their name to “Night Phoenix.” Whew! That was a close one.
The day after “Roster McCabe’s Final Show in Minneapolis,” their hometown, they put up a YouTube video on their page announcing the exciting news. The video was the final of 3 installments leading up to the announcement, which also all are quite funny, including a surprise cameo in the second video:
So why the name change? Well, looking at the details, it makes sense. A little less than a year ago, one of the founding members Drew Preiner left the band. As it turns out, the name “Roster McCabe” was derived from the maiden names of Drew’s mother and grandmother. With Preiner no longer in the band, the rest of the members, Alex Steele, Michael Daum, Scott Mullenberg, and Jeff Peterson felt uneasy about continuing the use of the name, especially considering the high aspirations the electro-rock group has.
My Grandma's name is Margaret Roster and my Mom's name is Margaret McCabe.

Trivia: “Night Phoenix” is also the title of one of Roster McCabe’s oldest songs from the live album Live at the Cabooze (2008).

… so now what do I do with all of my Roster McCabe shirts?
So I made it through Thursday night and it was amazing to say the least. I started off the night at Roster McCabe which just killed it. Majorly killed it, I woke up in a morgue this morning they killed it so hard. They did a cover of Daft Punk’s new single “Get Lucky”. When they started the first notes of “Get Lucky” my mind immediately jumped to that song, Though I wasn’t sure if I’d be so lucky. Sure enough what laid ahead was one of the best covers of that song I have heard yet.
After that we headed over to Digital Tape Machine. Also an amazing show. The energy in the crowd was prevalent. You couldn’t help but breaking into dance. I barely got any good shots of the show, dancing came as a priority at this one. I still feel the energy of it into the next morning. Though the show wasn’t done yet, we still had one show of the night to go to.
The last show that I hit up was Minnesota. This one man show is one that will put hair on your chest. He fuses an electronic feel with an acoustic jam. It was mind blowing. A perfect way to finish the night. Everytime I see this gentlemen her has such a strong stage presence, will be sure you to leave you smiling
Today I’m finishing up this blog, cutting it very close to Moe’s first set. Being the huge Moe-ron I am I am itching to get over there.
Wow! The weekend we have all been anxiously awaiting for has arrived. It has been a crazy ride so far, and the festival hasn’t even started. I’m so excited to have been named the 2013 Summer Camp Counselor! It is honestly an honor to be the third ever! The other CIT’s, Carmel, Alex, Sean, Woody, Eric and Brad, all gave me a fun fight to earn the title, and I’m very proud to rage with them in this family we call the counselors! I also wanted to give a shout out to my family and friends who helped support my campaign and believed I could do it! I’m even more proud to be raging with many of them this weekend.
Lets be honest. This line up is sick sick and SICK! Every single time that I logged into Facebook since November, I made it a point to go right to Summer Camp’s page to see if any more amazing artists would be announced, and every time I didn’t think it could get any better, it did. Summer Camp clearly knows how to put on a stellar line up each and every year with no signs of slowing down in the future. There are so many artists that I’m looking forward to. Starting off right from the beginning, giving us MOE and UMPHREY’S 3 days is a staple of Summer Camp. You don’t even have to know the rest of the line up to want to come to Summer Camp. That’s enough to get us all in our car traveling with our friends with that amazing May wind blowing in our face blasting some pre-camp music! I love the open road, and the 12 hour drive from the chicken wing capital of Buffalo was refreshing. Thinking of this line up gets me more pumped up then when I was a little dude on christmas morning! I mean, who isn’t PUMPED for 2 FULL sets up Trey Anastasio Band?! I don’t think there will be anyone not smiling from ear to ear during both sets ( let alone the whole weekend ). I’m also super excited for STS9, Yonder Mountain String Band, UV Hippo, Gramatik, and of course coming from my hometown of Buffalo, NY, Aqueous. Do NOT miss Aqueous at 11 AM Sunday at the Campfire Stage! These dudes seriously bring it! Who am I kidding though? I’m excited for this whole line up! It’s really hard to just name a few. I’m smiling just typing this out thinking about the late nights as well. There is so much going on it’s going to be one glorious adventure which I can NOT wait to spend with each and every one of you! Don’t forget, we are all one big family… Look out for each other. Lets make this a safe weekend that will be unforgettable.
See you guys soon!
