Go Red Team
If you’re particularly good at staying up all night (or waking up really early), you can catch sunrise kickball on Saturday. The sun was already up at 6am when the group converged on the grass towards the back of the Sunshine Stage viewing area, and about 200 people were there and ready to play.
The game is ON!
I stayed mostly on the sidelines – the collective outfield, really – where you main job is to catch any ball that comes your way. The mad dash to get on deck to kick was pretty impressive each inning, and I’m not entirely sure how teams went (or really if anyone cared).
The real gem of kick ball is Ryan. Ready to rock in a red kimono and a speedo, he twirled his mustache before throwing out pitches (side note, he’s a really good pitcher). The crowd loves him, and couldn’t wait to show off their skills and earn a high-five or a hug from him for a job well done.
It’s not easy to make it to morning kickball, but if you ever find yourself stumbling from the Red Barn back to your campside and the sun is coming over the horizon, toss down a Red Bull and head over to kickball for an hour. You’ll be happy that you did!

Last year, the Red team came up with some pretty amazing tshirt designs on their own. So this year, to make sure EVERYONE can support their team, we’re excited to announce that we are currently accepting submissions for each team’s Summer Camp Field Day shirt. There will be 1 winning design for each team (red, yellow, blue and purple). All 4 winning designs will be printed in their respective Field Day colors, so they must be a single color design. Designs can have no gradient or shading, and must all be original artwork. All submissions MUST include Field Day, 2012 and the name of your team somewhere on the piece. Other than that, creativity is encouraged, so have fun!
To enter, sign up for a CrowdTogether account and upload your design. All designs must be submitted by midnight on April 20th. Then, fans will have an additional week to vote for their favorites. The designs with the most votes for each of the four teams at midnight on April 27th will all be named winners and each receive a pair of 3-day passes and VIP upgrades to the 2012 Summer Camp Music Festival.
Entries that do not follow the rules will not be considered, and may be eliminated from the entries by the Contest Director at their discretion.

Hey Campers,
Umphrey’s McGee will be playing at The Canopy Club in Urbana, IL on February 19th….the weekend after Valentine’s Day! So we thought, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, to bring a Booth Love Photo Booth to the event for charity.
At the Summer Camp Field Day table you will be able to buy raffle tickets to win passes to Summer Camp, merchandise and more. Each raffle ticket will give you 1 photo in the Booth Love photo booth. The $5 from each raffle ticket will go to benefit the Champaign County Humane Society in Urbana. Fans will have from 8pm-12am to enter and snap their Booth Love photos. Winners will be notified by text message by the end of the show and can come collect their prize at the Field Day table after the concert.
For another chance to win, after the concert, the Summer Camp Facebook page will post an album of the photos taken throughout the night. Tag yourself for a chance to win one of 3 Thursday Pre-Party Passes!
This is a Summer Camp Field Day event so every raffle ticket purchased will count for points for the Red, Yellow, Blue and Purple Team. The team that raises the most money for the Champaign County Humane Society will win the Booth Love event!
The Champaign County Humane Society is funded entirely by donations from generous animals lovers. They need our help to continue the high standard of care they offer to homeless animals. Your donations will make a difference in the life of a dog or cat, puppy or kitten, rabbit or guinea pig.

If you’ve ever been to Summer Camp, you know bandanas are an essential accessory. Which is why last year, we introduced the Summer Camp Bandana Design Contest, to determine which design gets printed and sold as the official Summer Camp Bandana! And we’re excited to announce that we are currently accepting submissions for the official 2012 Summer Camp Bandana!
Bandanas will be printed in all of our Field Day colors, so they must be a single color design (black and white, red and white, blue and white, purple and white, or yellow and white). Designs can have no gradient or shading, and must all be original artwork. You do not have to use our official logo, or include the dates or year of the festival, but you MUST include either “Summer Camp” or “Summer Camp Music Festival” somewhere on the piece. Other than that, creativity is encouraged, so run with it.
All designs must be submitted by midnight on January 27th. Then, fans will have an additional 3 weeks to vote for their favorites. The top 3 designs at midnight on February 17th will all be named winners and each receive 2 3-day passes to the 2012 Summer Camp Music Festival.
From the top 3 designs, we will select which design will be printed and sold as the Official 2012 Bandana, and THAT designer will receive 2 Super Deluxe VIP upgrades and 10 of their printed bandanas, on top of the 2 3-day passes (and all the glory!).
Keep in mind, fans will be able to vote on your designs as soon as you post them on the contest page, so there is definitely an advantage to posting your design(s) early!

Friday ended up being a very late night – I mean any night that has bluegrass ‘til 3 am is probably gonna be a late night for me. Anyway, it took some work to get off the mattress and into the world that is Summer Camp. So after eating something a few friends and I headed out to see my hometown heroes, Rebirth Brass Band. And like always, I enjoyed the hell out of it. They are truly marching band virtuosos who have created and improvised blend of funk, jazz, and marching tunes that’ll make your ass move. I’ve seen Rebirth quite a few times and they never cease to impress me, if you make it down to New Orleans you should swing on by the Maple Leaf Bar, they play there once a week. So basically, I love Rebirth. And even with that deep love of rebirth I really wanted to catch the end of Family Groove Company and get over to field day.
One of the most ridiculously funny and disgusting moments of my life happened soon after I arrived. I checked in as a pie eating competitor. In high school I had won a few eating competitions and I thought that this was something that I could definitely help the red team, “RED TEAM RAGE!” win. I was desperately wrong. The pies were not really cooked and so the mix of cold pie filling with uncooked dough was barely palatable. It was so gross. And while my friend Matt screamed encouraging words, such as “Dive your whole face into it, you fat-ass,” it was not a competition I could win. It was awful. But I would do it again for the Red!
Now that afternoon passed by with a fun set by Wiz Khalifa, not my favorite thing, but it was fun. And then we went to Girl Talk. Now I’m not a huge fan of electronic music, but I have a confession. I have a terrible guilty pleasure – pop music. I love it. And I think a lot of us do – we hear the beats from “My Pony” by Ginuwine, and you just can’t help it. And then Kelly Clarkson blows up the scene. Yes, it’s a guilty pleasure, but Girl Talk is surely a member of the boogey patrol, and throws one hell of a fine party.
That evening we caught both sets of moe. which were just amazing. They played Recreational Chemistry and just set the place on fire. One of the really fun moments we had was during setbreak. We were restless but didn’t really want to have to move our chairs and bags, so we stayed. And we began to play four square. My friend Allie made the borders out of trash on the ground and we began an epic game of four square. Strangers became friends as people pummeled the ball into corners hoping for their chance of glory. While it was unorganized, confusing, and I’m sure at times annoying – God, I love four square. During the second set of moe., I kissed everyone I knew, and a lot of people I didn’t.
And that kissing continued right on through Big Gigantic and Cornmeal. I love the campfire stage. It’s just a magical place at night. I’m so happy it’s at the bottom of the hill and that the fire’s off to the side now. It’s just the best place to end the night. Dance in the barn ‘til you can’t move anymore and then come boogey to some homey bluegrass til the wee hours of the morn. It was awesome.

You must sleep in the forest, I can’t imagine being anywhere else. Every year that I have gone to Summer Camp I’ve somehow managed to have a camping spot in the woods (mostly I have awesome friends). Anyway if you sleep in the forest there is abundant shade and it stays cool and you can sleep in as late as you need to, and that is just what I did.
I made my home in an Insta-Clip that my friends brought with them. It was where we stored our food as well as where I slept. So I woke up to eggs being cooked right next to me. This was perfect. I move slowly in the morning (let’s be honest, I always move pretty slow) and so I didn’t make it out of the campsite until moe.’s first set. And they played my favorite song, St. Augustine. God, I love that song, just makes me feel good about the world.
After moe. my peoples and I went to the 312 tent to participate in field day and get our red bandanas. One of our teammates had made shirts and so I think me and my friends bought about 20 of them and stayed together throughout most of the day. So if you heard people screaming “Red Team Rage!” Well, that was our fault. And we would unapologetically do it again. Overall Field Day was a success and was a good time. There are a lot of kinks to be worked out, but it was fun as hell, especially if you’re rolling with a really competitive group of people who love yelling.
We made it to De La Soul that afternoon and I can now say that I’m really not a big fan of hip-hop, I keep trying though. There was a lot of energy and we had a good time – I think I just don’t like hip-hop much, so sue me. Anyway, my buddy Max had a Pee-Wee Herman doll on a stick and it made quite the impression on the De La Soul crew, Red Team had raged once again.
We then ate some CeVapCiCi, which you should have also done. They made
beef-lamb-pork sausages, put it in a pita, covered it onions and you added a red-pepper eggplant sauce. It was seriously amazing. And the people were kick-ass as well. So here’s to you CeVapCiCi Man, I love you.
We caught Yonder, and 7 Walkers, which were both amazing, but the show that blew me away was Greensky Bluegrass – they were awesome. I’d never really listened to them before, despite having been to festivals where they had played and they really just rocked the house, or amphitheatre, or hill by the barn… whatever. And you know what, they also got down with Pee-Wee, making Pee-Wee on a stick the word of the day. And they shared with us some of their wisdom, “The first year you come to Summer Camp, you’re like an owl pellet. And the second year you’re like a chipmunk, some of you out there are like badgers…” Thank you Greensky Bluegrass – this badger is going to bed.

Normally, Summer Camp has started the Festie season off for me. There was a sense of anticipation – I would listen to moe. more, download songs by artists I hadn’t heard of, and check the page constantly for updates. This year, I thought that would be different. I thought that since I was going to Hangout Fest in Gulfshores, Albama the weekend before Camp that my anticipation would be thrown off. I was so wrong. While I’m still excited about Hangout (I get to see Widespread two weekends in a row!) I’m much more excited about Summer Camp.
I can’t wait to see all the bands playing. Now if you’re like me you’re definitely excited about moe., Widespread, Yonder, and Umphrey’s, but it’s the bands on the little stages where I will dance my pants off. No pants, literally. I can’t wait to see the Ragbirds again. Their worldly eclectic music lead by Erin Zindle fiddling her heart out will make your ass move. Coming out of New Orleans, I invite y’all to come catch the funk that is Rebirth Brass Band. And what about the Wood Brothers? I know I’ll be watching Chris Wood pick the hell out of that bass Sunday in the middle of the night. And while I’ve never seen Gaelic Storm live, the silly-fun nature of their song, Raised on Black and Tans has me ready to stop by and give them a chance.
Now, we all know the lineup is sick, especially if you’re into… well, music. The thing that currently really has me going is the Field Day competition. I think that’s what I love most about Summer Camp. I get to see some of my favorite bands, and act like a child. I get to dance with ribbon dancers and hula hoops, and blow bubbles and eat grilled cheese like there is no other food on the planet. This year I get to compete with the best random team of people ever (GO BIG RED!) I get to watch shows with them. I get to dance with them and rage with them and I get to play hard. So what am I excited about: SUMMER CAMP!
