Getting excited & some tips for first-timers, by CIT Abby

Every year, it seems like Summer Camp is so far away, and then these last few weeks fly by in no time.  Can you smell it?  It’s almost here!  Here are a few things I’m super excited for…

  • The entire Campfire Stage line-up.  It is sick.  Chicago Farmer, Greensky Bluegrass, and then Hot Buttered Rum in the wee hours of the morning?  I just saw them at the Vic with Cornmeal on 4/20 and I truly fell in love with this band.  They are not to be missed.  For what is thought of as a smaller side stage, the Campfire Stage is pulling some pretty serious weight this year.
  • Weir, Robinson, and Greene Acoustic Trio.  I am beyond excited to hear these guys collaborate, and I can’t wait to hear what kind of set they put together.  Late afternoon on the Sunshine Stage is the perfect slot for this set.  Also, if you don’t know Jackie Greene, click here and check him out – he’s (in my opinion) one of the best lyricists around right now.
  • Morning yoga at the Soulshine Stage.  Confession: I’ve planned to do this every year and have never actually gone.  I’ve even brought my yoga mat and everything… but let’s admit it, 10am is a tough time to be up and moving at a festival.  Everyone that goes says it changes your day – gives you energy, and re-centers you for another day of raging and music.  So this year, I will make it happen.  (Probably.)

If this is your first time at Summer Camp, or a festival in general, here are some tips:

  1. Don’t forget your ticket.  Really.  Every year I see sad people in line realizing they forgot it and are 3 hours from home.  Triple check it, people.
  2. Bring baby wipes.  Showers are available, but baby wipes will save your life.
  3. Print out the schedule!  Yes, they give you one at the gates, but every year by Friday afternoon there are 10,000 people asking to see a schedule.  I don’t know how thousands of them get lost every year, but they do – print out a backup, and you will be everyone’s best friend.
  4. Forget about a map.  You’ll figure out where you’re going in no time, and there will always be a friendly face to point you towards the next stage.  Just let go, and you’ll figure it out.
  5. You cannot pack enough of the following items:  bottled water, glowsticks, hair rubber bands (for girls or long-haired boys), sunscreen, an extra pair of party pants (in case you dance yours into oblivion), and smiles.
  6. If you forget any of the items mentioned above, there is a grocery store right down the block from Three Sisters Park.  If you’re traveling from afar, I’d suggest stopping there for your ice & perishable food right before you head in to the greatest weekend of the year.

That’s all!  So start packing and get pumped, because I have a feeling this might be the most epic Summer Camp yet…

xoxo

Strange Arrangement at the Other Side November 26th

Hey all,

Just a week after I got to see Roster and Kyle Hollingsworth, coming into town is Strange Arrangement.  These guys are from Chicago and have played Summer Camp before. They played an awesome show at Cervantes Other Side and they were even recording for a DVD…I managed to get a copy of one of the song on there…Check it out here:  Strange Arrangement – Sweet Love

Unfortunately I couldn’t sit down with them, but I did get to ask them some questions over email, check out their answers below:

THE INTERVIEW:

Jeff – Where are you from, individually and as a band?

Strange Arrangement – We are all from the South West suburbs of Chicago.  Jim Conry is from Willow Springs, IL.  Kevin Barry from Hinsdale, Joe Hettinga from La Grange, IL and Steve Sinde is from Burbank, IL.

J – Where did your band name come from, it’s usually a good story, no?

SA – Haha! We used to play together in High School and the name came from a very quirky friend Mitch Manz that thought the words just sounded hilarious.  He also played Harmonica and percussion in the band and when we were trying to name the band all he kept saying was “No way!!!! Strange ArrANGEment!!! Plus, the name definitely fits the music.  We reformed in 2007 and thought about a ton of different names but SA just stuck with us…

J – How long have you been playing together?

SA – Jim, Kevin and I (Joe) have been playing together since 1997.  But went separate ways from 2000 until 2007 when SA was reformed in Chicago in 2007.

J – What festivals have you played before?

SA – We’ve played at The Big Up, Bear Creek, North Coast, Summer Camp, Hoxeyville, Rootwire,  Shoe Fest and a lot of smaller regional festivals in IL, WI, IN, OH and MI.

J – What would you say your biggest show has been so far?

SA – Our biggest shows have been Bear Creek, Rootwire, Hoxeyville, Summer Camp and opening for Umphrey’s at the Canopy club and UM After show on the new years run last year at Kinetic in chicago.  Also, the House of Blues in Chicago on the main stage.

J - I know it’s a rather vague question, but tell us a little about where you are at in your career as this band and what kinds of initiatives you are taking to continue moving forward…

SA – We are currently changing from a regional touring band into a national touring band.  We recently have gone to Northeast, Southeast and Southwest markets and plan on returning to each of these regularly.  We’ve recently expanded the production of our shows to include a light rig and will soon be releasing our live shows for download so wherever you are, you can get some Strange live!

J – Are you trying to get into Summer Camp?  If so, what is that process like?

SA – Of course we want to play at Summer Camp!  We love that festival!  We keep playing heavily in the Midwest to keep spreading the gospel of Strange Arrangement

J - Anything you’d like to add to tell the fans of SC music festival?

SA – We are playing a Jam Productions show in Chicago at Park West on Friday Jan 27.  It’s a CO-Bill with Strange Arrangement and Greensky Bluegrass and Chicago Farmer opening!  Definitely not to be missed!  Our website is the best place to keep up to date on new announcements and show listings.   www.strangement.com   Our winter tour will be at least 25 shows so stay tuned and hope to see you there!!

Sexfist aka The Henhouse Prowlers at The House of Blues Chicago

After a great night of music with the String Cheese Incident in Chicago we decided that we just hadn’t had enough. Mikey and I got dropped off at the House of Blues for Sexfist. Also known as the Henhouse Prowlers this group of bluegrass dynamos brought the heat to their SCI after show. The Henhouse Prowlers played Summer Camp in 2009 and this last year in 2011. I didn’t get a chance to see them, mainly because I was so busy with my duties as Camp Counselor. So this was a great opportunity to see this incredible group. As the snow began to fall we entered the nearly empty club. Luckily for us they hadn’t started yet. Within a few minutes of our arrival we watched as four gentlemen dressed in suits saunter out onto the stage.

They eased into the show demonstrating their prowess on the strings. Fast picking and solid harmonizing seem to be the hallmark of this band. As the room slowly filled up never reaching more than about fifty or so souls I felt lucky to be there and witnessing this great music. Heavily immersed in the old timey sounds, they also brought a freshness and zeal that made for a truly interesting experience.

Highlights from the show included a zipping version of Mr. Charlie that kicked off the dust on the show weary crowd. Additional highlights from the show included Old Home Place, Midnight Moonlight. A mix of classics, covers, and original picking tunes what we witnessed at The House of Blues. For their encore the band walked off the stage and played unplugged. They treated us to a sweet version of I’m Blue I’m Lonesome before calling it a night in the wee hours of the morning. This was my first time seeing this group and I was truly impressed with the entire package. From their attire to their pick of venue to their overall style, this show was the gem in the doughnut of my weekend in Chicago.

Madison + EOTO = A Ragin Time

You know living where I live is pretty sweet. I only need to travel a few hours to get to all the best shows in towns like Milwaukee, Twin Cities, Chicago and of course Madison. A short 2 hour drive to Madison led me to The Majestic to see Colorado natives Michael Travis and Jason Hann of EOTO. We get the venue to find out we had scored some meet and greet tickets for only $20. With that I had the awesome pleasure of striking up a conversation with Jason Hann who plays drums and vocals and let me tell you he is one of the coolest most chill guys I have ever met in my life. He is funny and charismatic so I’m sure he has no problem picking up the ladies hahaha. Any who, we chatted of course about the fabulous Summer Camp Music festival. I asked him what his favorite Summer Camp memory was and he didn’t hesitate when telling me his story. He said his all time favorite memory is getting stuck in New York due to weather. I know that doesn’t sound fun but what comes next would be a topper for me. He told me about being stuck and wanting nothing but to make it to Scamp so he had to do the unthinkable, hitch hike!!!! Just kidding they did do an outrageous stunt though. They had to rent a plane but not any plane, a private jet. YEAH BUDDY do they know how to rock it in style. He said the plane made it to Ill with just enough time to set up stage and start playing an amazing set. We joked about the cost of the jet and how is was mear pocket change. We all have $10,000 just lying around hahaha. But he also stated that he could never forget stepping outside after the show and finding ankle deep mud, who else can forget that. I got to snag a signed poster from them and make my merry way to the balcony to enjoy an awesome with my dear friend PABST BLUE RIBBON BEER. Nothing could go wrong.

Now let us review the SICK show they put on. I couldn’t believe my ears when they played one of my all-time favorite Tupac songs Baby Don’t Cry. I was pumped beyond belief because that was the last song I expected them to mix by the man himself Tupac Shakur.  They mixed a bunch random songs like the ever popular Nysnc, took me back to when I was just a weee little girlie and kind of made me giggle.  But let me tell you EOTO definitely knows how to throw down and get the crowd pumped. You can tell they are very fan oriented (like most bands) by their smiles and the connection they make with the crowd. I don’t think anyone walked out of that show dissatisfied. After a killer 2 set show all I wanted to do was rage some more. Sadly I had responsibilities in the morning and had to leave the Madison community to make my venture home. I was bummed the next few days when all the Wausau folk that attended the show talked about chillin with Michael and Jason at an after party at my buddy Waubs house. I was sad but glad at the same time. It only made me want to support the band even more knowing that they don’t let their fame get in the way of hanging out with the fans and just being regular dudes, mad props to EOTO.

All I have to say to you people is check out EOTO if you never have because no one I know has ever been disappointed.

Let Me Hear The Music

Ok folks, there are a few things that the state of Wisconsin is known for and they are the
cheese curds, the beer, the Wisconsin Dells and Summer Fest. Summer fest is the biggest
music festival in the US an it is held through the month of July in Milwaukee. The weather was perfect, the choice of friends who came were perfect and being able to pre party in the parking lot was even more perfect because then we didn’t have to buy drinks in the park. I was pleased to travel the 3 hours from my house on a special Thursday to make it to see the Summer Camp artists such as Yonder Mountain String Band, G Love & Special Sauce and Michael Franti all in one set. And let me tell you that was the down fall, having to pick between who I wanted to see because they all played at the exact same time…..LAME. But me being me I made it to all!!! I started at Yonder who played an amazing Kentucky Mandolin and helped me to boogie down with my close friends and fabulous boyfriend. I figured having my adventure start at Yonder was a good choice, they have always pleased me with how they open their shows and how fast the crowd responds to the twangy beat. After grooving to Yonder for a tid bit I mozzied my happy butt over to G Love who rocked the crowd and made me appreciate glow sticks the size of my leg because holding one of those babies up in the air for more than a second makes me wonder how people at Summer Camp can hold all the totems and such for a whole day hahaha. It gets hard if you have never done it before but seems to get easier the better the show I have noticed. Like anything else it easy to dance, sing, hold totems and such if you are an awesome set so G love made it easy for me. After getting groovy to some G love I made my way over to my first ever Michael Franti show and let me tell you it was nothing like I expected. I haven’t really listened to much Franti but that man can throw down and make the ladies woooh hehe. If you have never seen the man than I highly suggest it because he is tall and handsome. Not only that but the man had talent and soul. I would enjoy seeing him again if you know what I mean. But t makes me happy to have seen him for the first time with good friends of mine. I ended up staying at the Franti show for the rest of the evening. The energy from the crowd was immaculate and the music was new to me and good.

It was really cool when we walked out of the park when the music was over. Our hopes were high, our crave for music was mouthwatering and there were some talented boys right outside trying to earn a buck and feeding our need for more. These four boys were skilled and had their stuff together. It is so hard to tell you how talented they were but let me tell you I bet they walked away with at least $1000 that night. They set up right outside the main gates to anyone who walked by had to at least hear them. When we heard the commotion we couldn’t help but walk over and see what all the hubbub was about. They were playing 5 gallon bucks like I have never seen. They were playing right on with one another, throwing sticks in the air, saying their

little tone “we want a dolla, I know you got a 20” all together perfectly. It was really cool. And no kidding people were dropping in money like no other, some people actually were dropping in 20 dollar bills. It was nuts but they were good. A buddy of mine decided he was going to drop in $5 but he wanted to play with them and they were cool enough to let him, it was hilarious because he couldn’t keep up with their speed. It was all in fun though. But these boys played out there every night and made a pretty penny doing it.

All in all if you are ever in Milwaukee during the month of July I would highly suggest hitting up Summer Fest. It’s a guaranteed good time.
