Friday was by far the best day of Summer Camp in my opinion, a lot of that having to do with the weather. I like to rage, but I also like to do it in the sun!
The first show I made it to was the Moe. set on the main stage. Camp Counselor Kyle Hess had the extremely exciting job of introducing Moe. and kicking the festival off on the right foot. It was AMAZING when I did it last year! This is just one of the awesome things you get to do while being the Summer Camp Counselor. Make sure and try your shot at being Camp Counselor next year. We need another girl to win! The sun was out for this set and the ground was amazingly enthusiastic. Moe. opened with Captain America and finished with an encore of Okay Alright. Amazing set if you can find a place to download it.
Coincidentally a friend of mine, Jess Jennings won the Summer Camp song writing contest. So around 7 we dared to miss the opening few songs of Umphrey’s and headed over to the Soul Shine tent for Open Mic w/ Jaik Willis. Jess sang her song about her Summer Camp experiences with the help of Josh Houchin from Sun Stereo (SS was a workhorse this year with 6 sets! Including a late night set that I like to call Dub Stereo). She did a great job and so did the others that attended open mic.
By the way, there are a TON of ways to win free tickets to Summer Camp besides the Camp Counselor program and the song writing contest. The Summer Camp Facebook page has contests all year long and more and more leading up the festival. There are also several other contests like the bandana design contest & the t-shirt design contest where you can not only win tickets, but see YOUR ART on all the Scamp gear!
The rest of the day went great as you can imagine with a run like UM > EOTO > UM > STS9…and…the weather was great! Which was a totally different story the rest of the fest…but there was still plenty of fun to be had!
